Will the Male Impersonators Please Stand Up

kayla-hawkeyeI can’t believe it. Now even my son has a female avatar. He started playing Guild Wars. Oh yes, he has the expansion pack as well. After all, when I am addicted to MY virtual life, who am I to refuse the use of my credit card to him? The graphics in GW look much like SL. Each time I catch a glimpse of his screen, I blink in confusion, because I know he isn’t in SL, but it looks like “home” to me. Anyway….. So he’s got a female av. (He’s 18, I can’t stop him. LOL. Happy Birthday, my wonderful boy!) I just looked at him when he showed me. You know that “look”. The one mothers give their sons. THAT look. He said “Mom, I know why all your friends have female avs. The guys just look stupid.” Oooooohhh-kaaaay. Sure. Of course. I said “So you too are spending hours staring at a female derriere (that is not the word I used, in case you are wondering). So HE made the “son” face back at me. You know that one too. That long-suffering “how many times do I have to make this woman see reason” look. He repeated that the guy avatars looked bad BUT, he hastened to assure me, when he plays a wizard, THEN he uses a male avatar, because the beards are cool. ROFL. Yeah, the first thought of a wizard IS Merlin or Gandalf, this is true. Quick thinking, hon.

I may have once agreed that the male avatars are blech. But not anymore. I have seen some VERY good looking male avs in SL. Even more than good looking. A friend sent me a pic of her partner. He was downright hot. So guys – I’m simply not buying that excuse anymore. ‘fess up.

So. Here’s my question to you all. Do you know ANY females with MALE avatars? They have to be that av more than 25% of the time. That male persona has to have friends, inventory, history, etc. Come on – tell me you are or that you REALLY know a female living in SL as male. I have not, to the best of my knowledge, met a single one. I think it’s an urban legend.

There's not much to say about me. I discovered SecondLife by accident, wandered in, and decided I wanted to stay. This blog was a chronicle of my adventures and misadventures in SL. It also includes stray thoughts that occur to me as a result of my time in SL. Both I and my avatar are female. We both love water and the beach and gardening and parties and hanging out with friends. Updating this after quite some time. I haven't appeared in SL in many many months (probably over a year by now) but SL has remained in my thoughts. I do miss my SL, but at least I still have contact with some of my friends from there. In the meantime.... this blog has evolved to be about my RL adventures. :) Nowhere near as risque as my SL but I do keep busy. I still like all the things listed above. I didn't have any cats in SL (only ducks and a panda) so my cats feel that they should play starring roles in my posts. :) I didn't do much eating IN SL although certainly food and drink accompanied me in RL while I roamed inworld. Cooking and baking have become more fun and interesting once I redid my kitchen. That renovation took longer and cost more than if I'd done it virtually, but I'm thrilled to have a tangible new kitchen! I hope you like food and drink as well! Thanks for reading!

  1. And on a happier note 🙂 I have one good SL friend, an RL female, who has (at least) three alts; most of them are always female, but one is (like me!) male or female more or less at random, And (although I’m no judge of such things) the male form is apparently quite hawt. 🙂

    But the only example I know of of an RL female who plays an always-male AV is the one I mention in my previous comment there. And it’s a very interesting question why!

  2. Interesting – that’s the only *cough* name I could think of as well…..I probably just don’t get out enough. 🙂

  3. Well, after a whole time of impersonating females I have gone over to play a male character/avatar. The argument I hear most of the time from other male friends who decide to play females, is that if you have to stare at the back of your avatar for hours it should at least look nice 🙂

  4. The question is: why doesn’t that same argument apply to the RL girls? Don’t they prefer looking at boys’ bottoms? 🙂

  5. @Dale – yes, that IS curious, isn’t it? Apparently girls do NOT prefer looking at boys’ bottoms. 🙂 Go figure.

    @Bastian – wow! I’m impressed! Send me a pic. I want to see!!!!! (front view please. *grin* )

    @Jaymin – I seem to have heard that policy before…. 🙂
