Hair – Version 2

hair version 2
*grin* It’s getting better, no question about that. What do you think, RL friends? Is that my hair? I’m not sure why you can still see the edges of the prims. I have my expert adviser looking into it. Because I had that problem with version 1 and I thought I solved it. Also, it’s still perhaps a bit thin in spots. I want to rebuild the top from scratch. I had help with that – I want to do it ALL myself. *grin* Yes, I am being incredibly stubborn. But when I give this to anyone else – the only name on it should be MINE. I’ve had a request for white hair, so that it can be changed to any color. My expert needs to get back to me on that as well. But I’m quite pleased. This will do quite nicely in Opensim until version 3 is ready. I think I’d like to maybe take a break and start on boots.

There's not much to say about me. I discovered SecondLife by accident, wandered in, and decided I wanted to stay. This blog was a chronicle of my adventures and misadventures in SL. It also includes stray thoughts that occur to me as a result of my time in SL. Both I and my avatar are female. We both love water and the beach and gardening and parties and hanging out with friends. Updating this after quite some time. I haven't appeared in SL in many many months (probably over a year by now) but SL has remained in my thoughts. I do miss my SL, but at least I still have contact with some of my friends from there. In the meantime.... this blog has evolved to be about my RL adventures. :) Nowhere near as risque as my SL but I do keep busy. I still like all the things listed above. I didn't have any cats in SL (only ducks and a panda) so my cats feel that they should play starring roles in my posts. :) I didn't do much eating IN SL although certainly food and drink accompanied me in RL while I roamed inworld. Cooking and baking have become more fun and interesting once I redid my kitchen. That renovation took longer and cost more than if I'd done it virtually, but I'm thrilled to have a tangible new kitchen! I hope you like food and drink as well! Thanks for reading!

  1. v impressive!

The usual reason for being able to see the edges of flat prims like that is that the texture was applied to all the faces, including the end faces that ought to be invisible. I find it easiest to apply my 100% clear texture to the prim as a whole (with Highlight Transparent turned on so as not to lose it!), and then apply the visible texture to the faces that it’s supposed to be on (generally the two wide faces, for a flat prim like this).

White hair is nice because it’s so recolorable (or, as I think I actually mean, hair where the texture is greyscale, so that when you set the color to white it’s white, and when you set the color to, say, dark red it’s dark red). This doesn’t work for all textures, but if you just load it into Photoshop or whatever and convert it to greyscale and then save it, that might be all it needs.

I say, never having actually made hair, but having recolored lots of them to dark red. 🙂

  2. daleinnis is right, you can see the texture which is visible at the end of the hair prim – making it look like a line.

Your hair is looking awesome chick, you’ve got some nice body in there and the fluffiness looks awesome.

The shading on white hair would be have to be less profound than on darker colours, as shadowing is more prominent on lighter hair. Different colours require different amounts of shading for it to look natural so you might just have to tweak it.

  3. Thank you everyone! I appreciate the support and advice.

I know that you can see the line on the prims. I just don’t know why. They have a default transparent texture on all sides. The hair texture is only on the 2 sides. I am thinking that perhaps it has to do with the repeat factor (which is 1) or the offset (which is 0). Perhaps I need to tweak one of those.

@Dale – I will check out greyscale soonest. I’m very curious to see how that looks/works. (/me smiles and looks at TheWireGuy)

Anyway – definitely there were be a version 3 but you know what – I am walking around in SL, wearing THIS hair. *very big smile*
