A Last Hurrah

kitchen stove dining room doorLast night we threw our last party with our old kitchen. It was Memorial Day weekend, always a great time to throw a BBQ. We had several reasons, however, to throw a party. Our wonderful next-door neighbors are moving down (back) to Florida. They will be gone by mid-June. All of us in the neighborhood are heart-broken that they are leaving. We love them, we’ve had such good times together, it was a wonderful, wonderful relationship. I decided that we needed to do a good, fun send-off to remind them how much they like us all and that they would need to come back and visit. (I already have a promise of a return for our Passover seder. 🙂 ) When I first proposed the Bye-bye BBQ I thought that we’d have already lost our kitchen – that we’d be doing this kitchen-free. I’m very happy that we still had a kitchen to do food preparation.

Kitchen sink door to basementThat was the second “last hurrah” – bye-bye to the kitchen. For 34 years we’ve been entertaining, throwing parties, feeding people all from this kitchen and breakfast room. Okay – I’m exaggerating. The breakfast room and deck are only 28 years old. Putting that addition on the house was a true life changer. When we do BBQs, drinks and appetizers are out on the deck and the dinner selections are in the breakfast room. I probably should have taken some pictures of that last night – we had a MOUNTAIN of ribs. 🙂 And LOTS of non-meat sides because we have a fair number of vegetarians in our gathering.

view from breakfast room to front hallYet another reason for the BBQ was my brother-in-law’s birthday. He, like our guests of honor neighbors, is carnivorous so we decided on beef ribs. My sister has a membership in a fantastic warehouse called “Restaurant Depot”. It has every and anything a restaurant/food vendor would want/need. My brother-in-law and I went there on Friday to get the ribs. It’s probably not a good idea to let the 2 of us do this sort of adventure without a chaperone because we both believe that more food is better. No – more than more. We came home with about 30 pounds of beef ribs. But that’s fine, because in 3 days, we’re not going to have a kitchen, no stove, and we’re going to still need to eat. Leftovers!!!! I know some people HATE leftovers but I love them. Leftovers mean I don’t have to cook or prepare something. My husband is the real chef in the family (I bake) and he did a great dry rub on the ribs. For good measure we tossed in some chicken dogs and veggie burgers. view from breakfast room doorwayWe had sugar free cheesecake and sugar free pound cake with fresh fruit and whipped cream for those needing SF, and we had sugar full cheesecake and sugar full ice cream cake for those wanting that good old sugar hit. The appetizers were delicious also. I’ll also give a little mention to the fact that I nearly lost my husband last night. As in permanently. One of my guests brought a home-made keto dessert (she’s very big on all sorts of healthy diets) and I’m not really sure what these things were, but they were sugar free. So she gave 2 to my husband who, of course, ate them. I only found out after the fact when I heard her describing the ingredients which included macadamia nuts. I said – don’t give any to him because he is highly allergic to macadamia nuts. Which is when I heard he’d already eaten them. Everyone joked about it and teased him and her, but the truth is – he was somewhat sick from them last night. 2 little tiny doses but enough for him to have a reaction. :/

I originally planned to do this party today, but as I write this post, rain is thundering down outside, and our phones periodically beep with emergency alert notices about flash flooding. The weather forecasters got all of that right because that was the forecast they were giving a week ago, which is when I said better move the party to Saturday night.

breakfast room table pots and pans closetEighteen of us on the deck – chairs and space enough for everyone, although I will admit there was a tight squeeze in one corner. I had the chance to show everyone the plans for the renovation, and got to show off the now-famous upstairs hall door (you remember – an essential piece for The Great Incarceration). We’ve decided on the faucet for the kitchen sink (somewhat steampunky) and I got to show pictures of that as well. Plus the really amazing steampunk faucet we are NOT getting. 🙂 It’s going to be a huge change.

I’m going to miss my kitchen. I know that many people look at my kitchen and go “ugh”. It’s small, old, kitschy, loud. But I do love it. I love the pink and yellow and bright and the art work and the decorations. I no longer love the floor (28 years ago) or the stove (15 years ago) and I hate that the cabinets and drawers don’t work properly. I’m not loving the current ant invasion, either. Despite all its flaws, when it’s clean and bright, it makes me smile. It makes me happy. I’ve been worried about getting a new, modern, soulless kitchen. I think we’ve made some good choices so that although we will have a new modern kitchen, it shouldn’t be soulless. Time will tell.

breakfast room cat treeToday, however, is designated as “pack up the kitchen and breakfast room day”. Tomorrow is probably the same thing. We are working out a plan for how/when to move cat paraphernalia upstairs in preparation for The Great Incarceration. We are trying to determine in advance where we will put all the boxed up kitchen ‘stuff’. We have a lot of stuff. Where did all this stuff come from? Do we NEED all this stuff????

Tick tock, tick tock….. Less than 48 hours til the wrecking crew arrives…..

Happy Holiday at the CnP!

Sometimes you not only get what you need, but you get what you want. Prad, Bailey and Rrish brought my holiday wish to reality. It was wonderful. Truly wonderful. I think it had all the elements of a Crown and Pearl party, even though we were missing a few key people (Bailey Dazy – I missed you, but I hope you had wonderful time at the RL event). What makes a CnP party?

The people: I started a list back when I expressed my wish. I knew I’d forgotten some folk on that list, but it was fantastic to see them again. Dancing with some of my very favorite people!
.
.
.

The DJs: Always wonderful. Prad started it off, of course. *grin* Singing along to the songs. Despite the abuse. Aribeth, Rrishanna, and Bailey were all due to take the helm.
The chat: Yep, it degenerated, spun off track, was inconsequential, loving, abusive, fond, teasing, incomprehensible.
The CnP: Dressed up in its winter finery.
.

.

.

.
Outfits: Encouraged to dress to impress, everyone did. That was vague enough to allow all sorts of self-expression! And new looks – some avatars had make-overs!! woot!

.

.

.

The animals: You know you are at the CnP when there is some infestation of animals. Sometimes it’s squirrels, sometimes the floor vanishes and it’s fish, sometimes it’s sheep and reindeer.

.

The explosions: I confess that I had to leave before the grand finale, when all the explosions went off and the CnP was blasted back to prims, but I did see the setup begin.

.

Odd objects: There are always a few strange things rezzed and left about: walkers with headlights, flying purple bombs. Hey, look. It’s the CnP – you need to take that kind of stuff in stride.
.

Sim Full: Oh yes, almost from the get-go we hit the sim limit. 🙂 I forgot to take a picture of the map, to show all the green dots INSIDE and all the green dots lined up at the border. NEXT time we use a bigger sim. *grin*

.

Unexpected expulsions: One moment you are there, the next – poof! You were ejected. No, no one really know why, just grab a taxi and get back inside.

.

.

.

.

It was a wonderful, wonderful time. It sounded to me as if most everyone was having as much fun as I was. Of course I took a zillion pictures. I can only put half a zillion up here, but the rest are up on my Flickr account – I did try to get most everyone who was there while I ws. And yes – I DID get my holiday dance with Dale. 🙂

.

HUMONGO HUGS to Prad, Bailey and Rrish who made the effort to reconstruct the Crown and Pearl and dress it in its holiday best. You guys are fantastic! Have I mentioned that I think we should do a first day of Spring party???? *grin*

My Holiday Wish List

The holiday referenced is New Year’s Eve. My wish – to recapture a little of SL glory past. I have been thinking on how to word what I want to recapture. I realized that the “peak” SL moment typically differs from person to person. There are the oldies who say it happened in 2003 – the first moments. Then there are those who claim it was 2006. For me, obviously, it happened between July 2008 and now. *grin* And it IS all about me, let us not forget. Even my own “peak” moment does not encapsulate everything. It’s missing a lot of people who I knew then but weren’t part of the selected locale. It’s missing all of the building and learning I did for work. Most of the people that I want to be there would tell me that I’m wrong – that was NOT the peak time for that place. That is all true. But I want what I want.

I want a New Year’s Eve party at the Crown and Pearl this year. Yes, I know there is no more CnP. I know that everyone has moved on to other places, other pursuits. I know that many of the people who I think of when I think of the CnP are not even in SL anymore. Many of the people I want there were not on my Friends List nor am I on theirs. But they were there.

I want Prad and Bailey to reopen the Crown and Pearl for a holiday party. Dress-up. I want to see the people I think of as “my” regulars. I want all my other friends to come also, so they can experience a CnP moment too. I want to hear the DJs. I want a sploder. I want silliness and good humor. I want sheep. *grin* I want to see: Bails, Prad, Alann, Aribeth, Bailey (yes, there ARE two),Dark, Hell, Jellen, Mowgli, Nat, Rrish, Stoo, Landsend, Marisa, Clare, Ryker, BabyGlock, Kumi, Lucien and all the other people who used to be there but now I can’t remember their names because my brain is a sieve for things like names. But I want them all. (I’d really like all my NCI friends and my work friends and friend friends showing up as well.) And I want my New Year’s Eve day dance with Dale.

CnP Turned 2!

I love the Crown and Pearl. I love the place, the people. They throw the best parties. I wandered over the other night, feeling a bit down. BD was DJ’ing, friends were there. We all got on one chim and danced. Soon I was smiling and feeling great and having a wonderful time. So imagine what it’s like when they make an EFFORT at throwing a party.

This weekend was the 2nd anniversary celebration party. Four hours, 4 wonderful DJs: Bailey Longcloth, Aribeth Coronet, Rrishanna Regina and Bailey Dazy. Each took a different decade, starting with the 60s. Each did, as always, a fantastic job. I must say, however, that BD really got the most difficult task – the 90s. I ask you – was there ANYTHING worth hearing in the 90s??? *grin* As I typed that, I realized that one of my favorite songs is from the 90s: Rod Stewart’s “Rhythm of My Heart”. The party was going great, as to be expected. Folks changed attire with the decade. Then we hit the 80s and Honour brought out her Michael Jackson outfit. You KNOW what happened THEN. *grin* We all lined up, put on our Thriller AOs and the Crown and Pearl Dancers were born!!!

By the time we moved into the 90s, it really didn’t matter that there was no decent music worth mentioning. *grin* We were having so much fun and BD found the few good songs, and we danced on into the night.

The complete Thriller line-up and other shots are all up on Flickr.

And the Winners Are….

Ugliest - Ravenne in liederhosenI give up. I have way too many photos to do this properly. They are all up on Flickr. Go look there. *grin* We had 4 categories for prizes. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if I got photos of all of the winners. 😦 I think I have MJ, but I’m not sure. And Elise was camera-shy – so I did the best I could. I think. LOL. Honestly – I never really got so SEE anyone – I had ten IM windows open and was passing inventory like a crazed person. If I have them wrong – someone find the right pictures in Flickr and I’ll update the post.
