Almost Like Old Times

If you’ve read this blog from its inception, you know it began as a chronicle of my adventures in Second Life. Although I still maintain my (premium) account, I’ve not logged in for well over a year, maybe even longer than that. IMG_9753But for several years Friday night meant hanging about in SL, and listening to live music. I could always count on hearing Komuso Tokugawa, Von Johin, Taunter Goodnight, Keeba Tammas, Euterpe Queller, and Noma Falta. I loved them all but 2 of my best buds were friends with Noma. Friday nights would find me hanging with them for an hour, rocking out with Noma, who covered a lot of the strong women rockers, with a lot of Melissa Etheridge’s work. I loved my Friday nights filled with music, whether the live performances or hearing my favorite DJ Calli spin the tunes.

IMG_9745It’s been a very long time, as I said, and not only do I not get inworld anymore, I rarely get out for live music in the RL (is that outworld?). When my husband asked me a few weeks ago if I’d like to hear Melissa Etheridge I couldn’t say YES fast enough. Last night was Melissa-night.

We headed out for dinner in town first. We love catching an easy meal at the bar of one of the local restaurants. We love the bar (I mean the physical tangible wood, shape, look), the bartender (we’re on our 2nd bartender there), and the bar menu. I’m less thrilled with the dinner menu – the chef is enamored of pork in all forms and I don’t eat treyf. We were in luck all night long. There was room in the parking garage with a spot right near the exit door we needed. We walked to the restaurant and it wasn’t too cold nor was it raining. Given the weather lately, that was extremely lucky. There were seats at the bar (often come the holiday season the bar is full). IMG_9744When I told Matt (the bartender) I wanted something that would be warm and comforting he mentioned they had hot mulled red wine. PERFECT!!! My husband and I both ordered our favorite selections and sipped our drinks, chatted with each other, with Matt and had a great dinner.

We headed up to the theater and although it seemed like it might start raining, it stopped after just a very light sprinkle. We were warmed up from our meal so I have no idea if it was cold or not. *grin* Funny thing happened as I went through the bag check. The usher was looking in my bag and saw my lip gloss (really a lip moisturizer). She saw the brand name and got all excited saying she had wanted to try that brand, how did I like it? *laughing* So I stood there discussing cosmetics with her before being waved on through.

IMG_9757Perhaps my memory is faulty, but I seem to remember that when someone went to a concert there was no food or drink allowed in the theater, people listened to the performance and being there was about enjoying the performance, NOT about having conversations and wandering all over the theater. Times have changed. I admit I like being able to take a drink to my seat. But I noticed the gentleman in front of me reading recipes on his cell phone (I was standing, he was sitting and I happened to glance down). Really? Melissa is rocking the joint and you’re reading your cell phone?

I’m old enough to remember folks lighting cigarette lighters or matches as appreciation for the artist. IMG_9766I do not find folks holding up their cell phones to shine that light to be anywhere near as intimate and compelling as the fire. 🙂 I also marvel at the people who spent most of the night filming Melissa instead of putting down the phone and WATCHING her DIRECTLY and moving to the music.

It was a great night, don’t mistake me. Melissa has such energy, such passion up there. As my husband said on our way out “she has energy like Bruce” and I agreed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone who has Bruce’s energy but she may have come the closest. Oh really, you need me to tell you who BRUCE is??? Shame on you.

But there I was, rocking out to Melissa Etheridge on a Friday night. It was like SL, but better. 🙂

Memorial Day 2011

Sandy Whippet had a very good post the other day, listing sites in SL for observing Memorial Day. I knew I would not be able to get to those sites on the holiday itself so I headed over early to check it out Patriot Island with a friend. We landed in front of the Events Hanger and soon were greeted by Waya Snowpaw. Waya told us about the sim. He explained that the sim had resources for veterans, active personnel and their families. Non-military folk can meet some of the vets and learn about what it is like to be in the military. They also provide peer support. There are representatives for DAV and Fearless Nation and Wounded Warrior. We had picked a good day to stop by because holiday celebration and memorial events were going to be starting in an hour. On Memorial Day itself there was going to be an old-fashioned cookout and dance. Every month they hold a fund-raiser to help Wounded Warrior. For me, it does not matter your political persuasion – you must recognize that our military have taken on a job (just as most of us have) and that they do it well, to the best of their abilities. They do not set policy. So no matter your view, you can help support those who need help.

We wandered about looking at the memorials to departed friends, a rebuilt air-craft carrier, the various planes, and the recreation of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. There is a bald eagle soaring in flight about the sim. It is a beautiful build and extremely tasteful and respectful.

Later in the evening we tp’d back to hear Von Johin do a benefit concert for Wounded Warrior. Von was donating his time for the cause. When we left, they were only L$18,000 short of their goal of L$200,000. The music was great, the crowd was upbeat and the cause was good.

I hope you have a chance to visit and check out Patriot Island. It does give you time to pause and reflect, and honor those who gave their lives for something they felt was bigger than themselves.

Von Johin at Key West

I’ve been following the music about SL lately. Either I’m in a music-state-of-mind or the performers and DJ’s are all in perfect grooves. Last night I tp’d to Key West to hear Von Johin play. The really good performers never bore you, never play the same-old, same-old. I don’t remember the first song Von played, but what I remember was that I’d not heard him play THAT song before, and he did a great rendition (of course). His second tune was a medly – bits and pieces of many many songs all concatenated seamlessly into a fantastic song. I’d been sitting there a bit “meh”, but by the end of that tune I was grinning and feeling very upbeat!

I also learned something I never knew. I have an applause gesture. I use it all the time, usually while I’m dancing. I was sitting this particular evening, NOT dancing. I applauded. Well. I had no idea that the gesture actually moves my hands as well as makes a clapping sound. LOL. Makes sense, no? “gesture” “applause” But I’m always dancing, and that animation overrides the clapping. When I applaud, I smile and clap my hands.

You may notice the gentleman levitating in the air next to me. I am not sure if he was simply in a Zen state or if he was practicing for the upcoming Rapture. I was so absorbed in the music and IMs that other than the levitating meditater, I didn’t notice the rest of the crowd. I should have paid more attention because 2 friends from my NCI days were there in the audience! Shortly before the end of the concert, Aa came over to join me. I swear, that man gets younger every day! *grin* You’re looking great, Aa!

I Wanna be a Big Rock Star

Just like Von Johin of SL. I’ve posted before how much I love his music. I’m not alone in thinking Von is fantastic. He’s recorded CDs under his RL name. But his new album: it’s being released under his SL name!!!

On September 28, Von Johin’s album ‘Von The Revelator’ on LocoBop Records will be released. There is a ‘Cd Release Party’ in the works. Please visit the website, vonjohin.com, for full details.

MY understanding is that the party is going to be at Von’s standing Tuesday night gig: Dr. John’s Prim Economy on Isere at 7pm SLT.

The Vonettes are rumored to be planning a surprise as well. *grin* Don’t know who the Vonettes are? Better get on down to the party!!

So until we are rocking Isere with Von, I will practice my moves! See you all there! It will be a blast!

Time to Lend a Helping Hand

I don’t really care what the media reports: I don’t think the economy is turning around all that quickly. We are all feeling the problems of a slowed, stumbling economy. But some people are getting hit worse than others. Cypress Rosewood, an SL musician is having an especially poor 2010. It was just a few months ago his home was burglarized, his musical equipment stolen. Thanks to some good fortune and quick-thinking friends, most of the equipment was ultimately recovered. But not all. And there was damage. So it seems particularly cruel fate that the flooding in Nashville, Tennessee has cost Cypress his home and store. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start to heal the world. I have no doubts this week. I’m doing what I can to help Cypress Rosewood.

The following is lifted verbatim from Honour McMillan’s blog, with her permission:

Over the past weekend Cypress Rosewood lost his home and shop to the devastating floods in Nashville Tenn. Friends of Cypress have responded and are calling for a benefit held this Fri Please note times we hope you can stop by and give some support to one of SLs’ beloved musicians.

Just look at the line up of great SL Musicians appearing at the benefit:

* Von Johin
* Arman Finesmith
* Skye Galaxy
* Senjata Witt
* Frets Nirvana
* Gina Stella
* Anek Fuchs
* Bluemonk Rau
* Joaquin Gustav
* Kolor Fall
* Zachh Cale
* Moondoggirl Moomintoog

This has been a tough year in terms of disasters and a tough one economically. It’s been tougher on some than others. We can’t fix all the problems of the world or make all the bad stuff go away but we can help one of our own. The fact that we can also enjoy an amazing lineup of musicians is the gravy. 🙂

If you can make it to Mardi Gras Park on Friday, May 7 and help out Cypress then I hope you do so. Please share this with your friends!

4 Dancing Chicks

4 dancing chicks
On the fifth day of August, my true love gave to me:
4 dancing chicks
3 background folks
2 fantastic chims
and Von playing live yet again!

Von Johin has been very much in action lately and I have been loving every minute! Oura and I went chimera shopping earlier – she got hers, I was too tired to make a decision (yes, I seem to be back to being tired a lot. WHY isn’t 4 hours a night sufficient rest????) Dz has one of the best chims going – I LOVE dancing with Dz. So we all met up at Von’s concert. Sharon logged in and told me that she’d just graduated university!!! WHOOOO-EEEEEEEEEEEEEE Sharon!!!!! That is so fantastic!!!! So I tp’d her over and she jumped on Dz’s chim and the 4 of us danced up a storm. I am so proud of Sharon, let me say – she is smart, funny, talented. Congratulations, sweetie!!! She and Oura had already met, but I introduced her to Dz that night. Dz really is one of the best scripters I know. *grin* I love when my scripting friends hit it off. My friends are not only smart, but beautiful, inside and out.

I should mention that Dz and I were having a side conversation about my problems with my demo. Our demo has crashed the last four times we tried to run it. ???? I began to think Honour might be right and that it was my hair. 😦 I explained it to Dz who caught the culprit right away: my radar script. I had it cycling too frequently. So combined with other timers at the site, yeah, I crashed the region. LOL. Or at least that is the current theory. We’ve not had a chance to test it. So all you radar-wearing folks – be aware of what your scripts can do. Ahuva, Sim Destroyer.

DRAMA DOLLS are here!

dd signboardToday is the day!!! Now you can have your very own Drama Doll. Or two. Or three. Because, you know, DRAMA happens. What is a Drama Doll? A Drama Doll is your way to get satisfaction when someone in SL “does you wrong”. Read on as I plagarize the DD notecard:

Did somebody cheat on you? Were you insulted or offended by another SL resident?
Did you experience DRAMA?
It happens unfortunately.
Well Drama Dolls is here to help you get a bit of what you deserve in return – at the very least you are owed an apology!
Pick a Drama Doll that you can use to represent the individual who did you wrong. There are different price ranges, levels of detail, number of animations, types of dolls – something for everybody.

Drama DollsWe have macho types, the girl next door, elves, vampires and more! We even have Fuginistas – you know …. those people who like to make fun of you on their blogs because they don’t like your skin/shape/clothes. 🙂
We have the Doll you need to get closure move past this traumatic experience!
Take your Doll home – you will find detailed instructions and 4 copies of the Doll in your inventory. 3 of those Dolls are fully scripted and will give you the acknowledgement and apology you so richly deserve. Once the Doll has apologized it will disappear – quite dramatically! 🙂
The 4th Doll is not scripted but you can keep it as a reminder of your apology.
Please note that all of our dolls are multi-lingual and will operate in English, German, Spanish, Japanese, French, Portugese, Italian, Dutch, Russian and Norwegian.

Break InDale, Oura, Chestnut and I broke into the warehouse last night – we couldn’t stand to wait anymore. We wandered about ooo’ing and ah’ing and laughing. We each found a dozen dolls we HAD to have. So – when we shove you out of our way when we go to buy OUR Drama Dolls – you will need to find your own DD version of us to make us apologize. *grin* That’s the way it works!

Doll CozieBut there are not just Drama Dolls. There are DollCozies also. Honour gave me a Doll Cozy as a rez day present. I love her. Oura and I took her fishing last night after the break-in.
Do you know somebody who needs a hug?
If you are looking for positive Drama (because it does exist) we have DollCozies
.
You can purchase a Doll, name it and give it a message you’d like to pass to your friend/lover/partner/spouse. Your Doll will give them a Hug and your message.
Some DollCozies have flowers in their hands. Your folder will come with a pot of matching flowers you can also give your recipient.

The store opens today (11:00 am SLT) with two parties to celebrate, featuring brilliant blues man Von Johin. The first show is at the Euro friendly time of 11:00 am SLT. The second party will start at 6:00 pm and rock on for 2 solid hours. Honour is a proud Canadian and tomorrow is also Canada Day so if you want to join us for that reason alone please do! TP from this link.

Can music save your mortal soul?

the-french-quarter-rocks
sl-supremesIt can sure save mine. Always. If I am sad and feeling down, dispirited – a live concert by Noma Falta or Von Johin will get me rocking and happy. If I am happy and want to party on well, guess what – a live concert by Von Johin or Noma Falta will keep me going strong. *grin* Last night I made plans to meet up with Honour at Von Johin’s anniversary party at his French Quarter sim. I spent a good part of the day working on AhuvaHair Version 2.0 (wait til you see it – it will be SO much better than round 1) and helping a friend. So my to-do list and conscience were both clear when showtime rolled around.

The French Quarter belongs to Von and Harlee. von-johinThey bought it a year ago and all day was a celebration. Honour and I were standing about talking, waiting to see which stage Von would be using. An avatar rezzed in. To my great delight it was my friend DZ!!! The three of us headed over to the music. Honour and I tagged onto DZ’s chimera and danced the night away. That is another thing that I really should have. After all these months, I still do NOT have a way to dance by myself. I am still dependent on the local dance balls or someone’s chimera. /me makes note to self…. buy dance animation thing. *grin*
